SPEECH AT THE NOUN ORIENTATION CEREMONY



It's obvious that the National Open Universirsity Of Nigeria ( NOUN) orientate her students yesterday at various school centres across the federation. It was an exciting moment for the newly admitted students where they gots to know one another. 


It all started with an opening prayer led by one of the staffs in Mushin Study Centre after that the school anthem was taken by the I.C.T Department.
 
 Speaking at the orientation ceremony yesterday was the Director of Lagos study centre Dr. OLUBIYI Adeniyi Adewale where he made brief history of The National Open University Of Nigeria (NOUN) as first of it's foremost ODL insitution  in Nigeria. Tracing back to the history how it all began. NOUN was initially established on 22, of July 1983 as springboard for open and distance learning in the Country ( Nigeria ) and it was suspended by the government on April 25, 1984. 

However, it's  resuscitation begun on 12 April 2001 by the former President if Nigeria Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo which he played a vital role on the university to make it standard as it was today. it has over 32,400 registered then.


In 2011, NOUN skyrocket to had about 57,759 students. The National Open University of Nigeria operates from its Administrative Headquarters in University Village, Plot 91, Cadastral Zone, Nnamdi Azikwe Express Way Jabi-Abuja, with 63 Study Centres throughout the country It offers over 50 programmes and 750 courses 

He also made mention of things to know about NOUN which are as follows:

  • Learning without barriers 
  • Ope-ness in practice 
  • Separation of Teachers and Learners
  • Evolution of deliver on open land
where he fishes out  some of the advantages to enroll in ODL Institution in Nigeria which are as follows 

  • Democratization of Education 
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Second chance education 
  • Flexibility 
  • Accessibility
  • Affordability 
  • Removal of geographical barriers
  • Life long learning

we also have some of the challenges facing open learning which are highlighted below.
  • Long preparation time
  • Public perception 
  • Commitment
  • Self discipline 
  • Technology savvy
  • Broadband access and affordability 


He also stated that  NOUN had seventy six (76) study centres and still counting across the federation.. after the speech was the Counselor's speech where students got to know that the counselor are their confidants. If any students is finding it cumbersome to solve a problem by his/her self are advised to see the counselor for counselling...

On the last note, was the speech from the Director in Mushin Study centre Mr. Athanasius E. Onyeokoro where he gave some advised to  the freshers to focus on their studies..

Lastly,they also talked about financial issues which is the  bound between students and management. The amount to pay for freshers and returning students respectively, and vote of thanks was taken by one the students in mass communication department.
