National Open University of Nigeria has opened two new centres in prisons in Cross River State. The centres are in Calabar and Ikom prisons.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Controller of Prisons, Cross River State Command, Mr Imaikop Ndaekong.

He said enrolment had begun at the Calabar Centre for interested and qualified candidates.

“Inmates who are interested and qualified could be transferred to any centre of their choice to study,” he said.

Ndaekong solicited the support of members of the public, churches, non- governmental organisations and government to provide computers, e-libraries and other accessories to facilitate learning at the centres since NOUN is ICT-based.

“This will enable us to compete with other commands such as Lagos, Port Harcourt and Abuja. The facilities have capacity for as many students as can enrol. But they must have the general requirement for admission.

He also said many inmates sat for last year’s GCE exams and had good results, some with distinction.

The controller said as part of efforts to reform the inmates, they were also trained to acquire skills in any area of their choice such as carpentry, laundry, tailoring, weaving and hairdressing.
